Gilbert Melendez Leaves UFC, Signs Deal With Bellator MMA

Gilbert Melendez

UFC has lost one of their top lightweight fighters in Gilbert Melendez who was ranked  #2 in the official UFC rankings and #14 in the pound for pound rankings.

Gilbert announced the decision to switch over to Bellator on his twitter saying “Hey guys. As soon as I was a free agent, I had my team call Bellator, and Bjorn made an amazing offer that would allow me to reach my goals.”

Melendez will be a great addition to what may be Bellator’s strongest weight class, the lightweight division, where he could face off with fellow top lightweight’s Michael Chandler and Eddie Alvarez.

Gilbert Melendez Leaves UFC, Signs Deal With Bellator

This is what Dana White had to say before Gilbert Melendez’s signed with Bellator according to a report from YahooSports

“I like Gilbert Melendez,” White said Thursday before Melendez signed the Bellator deal. “I have absolutely no problem with Gilbert Melendez whatsoever. I think he’s a great kid. I think he’s smart. I think he’s a talented fighter. We’ve just got to get a deal done. It’s not about him. Let me just remove myself from that. Let Lorenzo deal with that. I don’t give a [expletive]. I’m over it. Lorenzo’s dealing with that, not me.”

Bellator CEO, Bjorn Rebney had much to say about signing Melendez and even said that he was one of the first guys he wanted to sign back when the organization started in 2008

“The moment Gil was legally able to explore the free agent market, Gil’s management team reached out to me and we began figuring out how to bring Gil to Bellator. It’s no secret that I’ve been a big ‘El Nino’ fan for many years. Gil was one of the first fighters I tried to sign when I launched Bellator back in 2008, and he’s grown and developed into one of the best and most exciting lightweights on earth.”

Gilbert Melendez is happy to be a part of Bellator and I would love to see him matched up with Eddie Alvarez or Michael Chandler, I think both would be outstanding fights.

It’s just a matter of time before Melendez gets a title shot in Bellator, and he has all the potential to be the new face of the organization.

What do you think about Melendez leaving the UFC for Bellator? Are you disappointed or are you excited to see the UFC’s #2 ranked lightweight match up with some of Bellator’s finest in Chandler and Alvarez?

I am interested in seeing how good Chandler and Alvarez really are and we’ll defiantly get the answer once they match them up with Melendez who has faced all of the UFC’s toughest competition!
